Bloomingdale’s was where my love of fashion initially took root. On the first floor, where Prada now stands, Chanel once ruled. As a little girl, I would climb onto a high leather bench, feet dangling, watching women try on bags with excitement and awe. There was something magical
about the way they held those quilted leather pieces, as if the right bag could transform them into someone new. I loved every second of the buzz and elegance around me.
We would afterwards head upstairs to sort through the designer clothing. As my mother sorted through the latest fashion and quipped with her fashion associate I would shift my attention to the monitors playing runway shows. The models on the screen seemed larger than life, gliding effortlessly in their couture. I imagined myself in their place, striding down the runway, wrapped in luxurious fabrics. Bloomingdale’s wasn’t just a store—it was my world. It was London, Paris and Milan all at once. It was a window into a world of beauty, sophistication, and transformation.
Though I eventually realized I didn’t have the features to become a runway model, my passion for fashion only grew. That early exposure led me to create Madison Avenue Spy, where I could channel my love for fashion into something all my own.
That’s the lesson: sometimes, our dreams don’t unfold the way we imagine, but if we stay connected to our passions it will find a way to express itself. Bloomingdale’s showed me that passion isn’t about achieving the original dream—it’s about finding the space to let that passion evolve.
The beauty is that I am still an avid Bloomingdales shopper and right now the fabled store is hosting a friends and family event where you can save 25% off a host of designer fashions. You can click here to see some of my favorite finds.
